What does this mean for the travel insurance policy booked with your trip?

We advise that you review your insurance policy wording for eligibility, benefits, and the type of expenses that can be claimed, as these can vary depending on which insurance policy you have purchased.

If you are considering canceling your trip due to the Coronavirus, please read your insurance policy thoroughly. Generally, fear of travel is not a covered event under most of our policies.

The following are the questions we are receiving most frequently in our Service Center:

Frequently Asked Questions regarding the Coronavirus and Travel Insurance:

I want to cancel my travel plans because I’m afraid to travel due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Am I covered?

Trip Cancellation for concern or fear of travel associated with the Coronavirus is not covered. However, trip cancellation or postponement due to your government’s travel advisory against travel to infected areas could be covered if your policy was purchased before the travel advisory was issued.

You are encouraged to file a claim if you have to cancel.  Please be specific on why you cancelled, as SOME policies may provide coverage depending on the exact reason of cancellation.

I have booked a trip to a destination affected by Coronavirus in the near future. Will I be able to cancel my trip and be reimbursed? What if my flight is cancelled?

Trip cancellation or postponement due to your government’s travel advisory against travel to the affected destination could be covered if your policy was purchased before the travel advisory was issued. You can be reimbursed for unused, non-refundable, pre-paid travel costs made through Expedia Group’s non-US websites if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, subject to the terms and conditions of your insurance policy.

If your flight to or from your destination is cancelled due to Coronavirus, there would be no coverage under the insurance policy.  However, we suggest you contact the airline to seek a refund.

Am I covered if I contract Coronavirus?

If you contract Coronavirus while on a covered trip, you could be covered for Medical Expense and Trip Interruption & Curtailment benefits if there is a confirmed diagnosis, subject to the terms and conditions of your insurance policy. Please note that you could be excluded from Medical Expenses coverage if you travel despite an advisory against travel to your destination.

What happens if I am quarantined due to Coronavirus?

If you are quarantined as a result of being diagnosed with the Coronavirus during your trip, you could be covered under the Trip Interruption/Curtailment benefits subject to the terms and conditions of your insurance policy.
